Slam dunking

Car door slams, I'm late for work.
Wrestle with the gate chain,
step back...
white shoes muddy the still water
bleached socks suck up murky hues...
"Stay out of the puddles" Mama's voice carries.
I hopscotch through a dozen more
laughing at the girl in the puddles
who bobs and ripples away
I catch her and stomp her with my new white shoes
wrestling with my book bag
wet tennies slam the pavement
I'm late for school.
